Ample Hills Creamery – Dark Chocolate

We’re walking along Disney’s BoardWalk and Alan whispers in my ear, “Do you want to taste the best ice cream in the world?” I really want to answer with a sarcastic, “Duh...” but I don’t. Instead I just nod a lot and start to drool. Conditioned response to the words “ice cream”!

A short walk from Walt Disney World’s Epcot, the BoardWalk is a quarter-mile long promenade with many unique shops and restaurants lined up along the water’s edge. At night, it’s all lights and activity. And that night, I do indeed have some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted; Ample Hills Creamery Dark Chocolate Ice Cream in a Dark Chocolate Cookie Cone!

Ample Hills is based out of New York, with several stores in Brooklyn and New York. I’ve been to New York, so I think it’s kind of funny that I find this gem in Florida. Maybe it’s like discovering Chicago style pizza for the first time while passing through Nebraska. (No, that didn't happen. Well not to me anyway.)

According to their website, www.amplehills.com, Ample Hills Creamery opened in 2011 in Brooklyn, NY. They make sure their ice cream is made with hormone free milk from grass fed cows and organic sugar.  They pasteurize their ice cream on site, so technically they’re a dairy plant. Sounds fresh!

My chosen ice cream treat is two scoops of dark chocolate in a homemade looking chocolate cookie cone. It’s not just any ordinary cone. It’s not a waffle style cone either, you know, those thin wimpy and overly sweet cones.

No, this looks like you took cookie dough and baked it in the shape of a cone. And it’s substantial. Got some weight to it! The color is a beautiful deep brown. Both the cocoa and sugar impact of the cone is mild but I love that. Don’t get me wrong, the flavor and the texture definitely hold up against two large scoops of ice cream!

The ice cream is so creamy it reminds me of drinking chocolate milk. Some ice cream is fluffy and full of air. It disappears in the mouth because it’s hardly there to begin with. But this ice cream melts (not disappears) in my mouth like butter.

The chocolate impact is rich and bold and intense. On the menu, the dark chocolate ice cream is advertised as “…made with 72% E. Guittard Chocolate.”  No wonder my mind is blown away. And my taste buds, too!
