What’s a bon-bon, you may ask? According to Wikipedia, the term bon-bon pertains to sweets, especially small candies, which are covered in chocolate.

Story has it that these treats’ origins can be traced back to the 17th century. Supposedly, they were served at the French royal court. The term was derived from the duplication of the word ‘bon,’ which means ‘good.’ Today, particularly in European languages, such term pertains to all candies or small confections.

This recipe is perfect for a homemade gift, or you can serve them at a party for a sight to see. If you plan on doing so, you might want to have mini candy boxes or mini muffin cups in hand.

Chocolate Filled Bon Bons

• 3/4 cup shortening
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
• 1 egg
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 3/4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 cup very finely chopped pecans or ground blanched almonds
• 3 1/2-4 dozen milk chocolate kisses

Preheat oven to 350°. Cream shortening and sugars. Add egg and extract; beat. Blend flour, baking powder, salt and nuts. Add to creamed mixture. Form 1-inch balls, press kiss in each one, completely covering. Bake about 12 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Do not over cook. Cool.

Enjoy! :)
