The most loved among Halloween goodies include: candy corn, gummy candy, chewy candy, hard candy, lollipops, licorice, and gum and mints.
But, according to a recent survey, chocolate remains the most liked treat for this coming Halloween. The survey also revealed that adults plan on getting a mix of both chocolate and candy for the ghosts and goblins who darken their doorsteps on Halloween evening.
“Individual buying and consumption habits aside, there’s no denying the role that candy of all kinds plays in this All-American holiday tradition – and that’s something even the grumpiest gremlin can celebrate.”, said NCA Vice President of Communications Susan Whiteside.
74% of the survey participants claim that it’s okay to indulge on seasonal chocolate or candy, while making sure to generally stick to a healthy diet. One of the best surefire ways to moderately satisfy your sweet-tooth cravings is by properly storing Halloween sweets to guarantee that they last well beyond trick-or-treating season.
With chocolate, you can store dark chocolate for over a year or more if you wrap it in foil and keep in a cool, dark and dry place. Your basement or pantry is a good idea. You can store milk and white chocolate under the same conditions as dark chocolate. However, the storage time only lasts no more than 8 to 10 months.
If you have leftover gummy candies with opened packaging, you should keep them in in a covered candy dish, away from heat and light at room temperature (about 70 degrees). When you follow this storage instruction, they can last up to nine months. If the packaging has not been opened, soft sweets will last approximately 12 months.
With candy corn, you store them under the same conditions as gummy candies when the packaging is opened, and will last until six months. Unopened, fresh packages will last about nine months.
On the other hand, caramel must be kept covered, away from heat and light at room temperature. If you properly store them, caramel candy can last six to nine months, even up to 12 months sometimes.
