avatarAustrian Students Develop Healthy Chocolate

By Joanna Maligaya on January 31, 2012 | Comments (0)

Good news to every chocophile out there. Pretty soon, your favorite guilty pleasure will be way more pleasurable! Students of the University of Applied Sciences in Wels, Austria are currently working to develop a certain type of chocolate that does not only taste good but also packs a lot of nutritional benefits.

I know where you’re getting at, and you may be right. Yes, it’s no surprise that chocolate has a lot of health advantages to offer, specifically because of the high antioxidant properties it contains. But this one is of different level, a higher one.

The students were able to come up with the special chocolate through a project in their course of organic and environmental technology. They were looking to bring the healthy apple back into the diet of Upper Austrians. The bitter-tasting and filled chocolate is made out of old, native apple varieties that are purified using apple brandy in oak barrels.

Certain varieties of apples contain high levels of polyphenols which are proven to prevent vascular deposits in humans, according to project leader Othmar Höglinger from the faculty for technology and environmental sciences at the University in Upper Austria. The main problem encountered, however, is the trouble in separating the healthy ingredients in the apple in order for them not to be harmed by oxygen so they are still able to seep through to the intestine when eaten in the chocolate, according to Höglinger.

The team, which is composed of biotechnologists with ages between 20 and 25 years old, is aiming to overcome this obstacle hopefully in two years’ time. The students of University of Applied Sciences are collaborating with chocolatiers, Martin Mayer Schokoladen in the development of this nutritious treat.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but you should still go easy on this particular chocolate as it still packs as many calories as a regular bar.

avatarCoco Preggers

By Bryn Kirk on March 3, 2011 | Comments (0)

Chocolates can easily help pregnant woman satisfy their cravings, but can they also provide a guilt free, good for you feeling?

Coco Preggers can.  A chocolate company out of California, Xan Confections, launched a new chocolate containing folic acid and DHA omega-3.  This chocolate was designed to deliver important nutrients during pregnancy.

Folic Acid helps prevent birth defects and DHA is a specific omega-3 fatty acid important to the correct development of the brain.

Coco Preggers chocolate bar is made of dark chocolate, about 51 calories and costs around $1.50.

The owner of Xan and the creator of Coco Preggers, Karen Anthony, says there should be no guilty feeling eating 2 of these bars a day because health benefits are high and calories are low.

Just to be fair, a person can get folic acid by eating spinach, lentils, and beef liver.  Don’t know ‘bout you, but I would rather have chocolate!

Coco Preggers isn’t the only product made by Xan.  You can get Coco PMS, too!

avatarBanning Chocolate Milk in School Cafeterias

By Bryn Kirk on August 31, 2010 | Comments (0)

Reports show that 71 percent of the milk served nationwide is flavored, and the predominant flavor is chocolate.  Most public schools offer chocolate milk as an alternative to white milk.

But chocolate milk is the center of controversy in many cities in the US.  The school districts of the District of Columbia; Berkeley, California; and Boulder, Colorado have already banned chocolate milk from the cafeteria.  Florida schools are considering it.

What’s the big deal?

As you probably know, obesity among children is on the rise in the US and foods high in sugar get a lot of blame.  Of course, there are two sides to every story, and this is no exception.

On the one hand chocolate milk is higher in sugar (almost twice as much) than white milk but on the other hand, many kids refuse to drink milk if it isn’t chocolate, and to grow up without the nutritional benefits of milk is unwise.

Milk, both chocolate and white, provides calcium, protein and vitamin D, all of which are lacking in our kids’ diets according recent studies.

Some parents say the added sugar in chocolate milk is worth the nutritional trade-off, while others say it is sending the wrong message about beverages high in sugar being part of a healthy diet.

What say you?  If you have an opinion, please comment below.  I’d love to hear your thoughts on chocolate milk in school.
