Brownie Bites Wrapped in Bacon

Everything tastes better with bacon!

A local bar & grill in my town has a bacon theme. They implemented the idea of serving all you can eat bacon, for free, during happy hour.

Their food menu serves only dishes with bacon. They offer usual items like bacon topped burgers and bacon wrapped water chestnuts, but there are also some surprises...

Brownies, Bacon, Dipping Sauce

One of those surprises is soft brownie bites, wrapped in bacon, and deep fried, served hot with a side of marshmallow dipping sauce!

Oh my.

I happened to be with friends at the saloon on Team Trivia night when I saw this tantalizing treat on the menu. It got rave reviews from a local TV station reporter and the picture had them looking amazing.

Now, I’ve had chocolate covered bacon before, and that tastes great. Why wouldn’t these beauties taste just as good? I mean, chocolate brownie covered in bacon is virtually the same thing, right? I had high expectations!

I should have listened to each person at the table (my husband included) as they unanimously and simultaneously said, “Those sound disgusting.”

But How Good Are The Brownie Bites?

Everything tastes better with bacon, right!? I can honestly say that brownies, wrapped in bacon, and deep fried, do not.

First, the texture... Imagine the sensation of a warm, fudge-like brownie melting in your mouth while a slippery, rubber-band like worm, stubbornly resists your chews and lingers long after the brownie is gone.

Blech.

Second, there's the grease. Those little nuggets of brownies soaked up the bacon grease and deep-fryer oil like a sponge. Some things come out of a deep fryer with a nice crispy coating on the outside, with the insides perfectly heated and tasty. These came out like an oil-saturated cake.

And finally, there's the flavor... The chocolatey flavor of the brownie was pretty good, and the marshmallow dipping sauce was a delicious complement, so I'll give them that. The bacon was smoky and salty, but generally flat in taste and impact. The two of them together did not create the wonderful pairing I had hoped for.

Maybe that reporter had had more beer than I did when he gave his review? And, maybe I should have had more beer to wash them down!

If you're a bacon fan, there's a lot of good food at The Saloon on Calhoun With Bacon, but in my opinion, the Brownie Bites Wrapped in Bacon are for amusement value only. Yep, I can say I tried them once.
