Chocolate Chai Tea

The history of chai tea goes way back. About 5,000 years ago, in the courts of Siam and India, legend says a king set his mind to create a healing beverage. He came up with chai tea.

I like chai tea and, of course, my predisposition to love all things chocolate has lead me to try various chocolate chai teas over the years.

This chai tea is made with Honeybush and Assam tea. Assam is a black tea named after the region it grows in, Assam, India.

Assam is generally known for being a full bodied tea with a malty flavor and dark color. "Breakfast teas" are often made with Assam or a blend that includes Assam.

Often, I like to have tea in the afternoon during break-time at work. A regular staple for me is Rooibos, including Red Bush and Honeybush. Rooibos is naturally decaffeinated and full of anti-oxidants. I love the earthy, grassy taste and deep red color. But I digress.

There are times I want to enjoy what I call a “dessert tea” in the afternoons. And this is where chocolate chai comes in!

indie chocolate chai has cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, orange peel, cocoa, honeybush, chicory, assam, and licorice root.

It is packaged as loose tea, so I put it in an infuser and let it steep for three minutes. Sometimes I add milk or cream, but I found no need to add sugar. The tea is already slightly sweet.

I love how the strong spicy flavors blend so harmoniously with the chocolatey notes. There’s no fighting for attention, they all play nice together in the mouth.

This tea is deeply satisfying, and is a rather nice “pick me up” during the long work day afternoon!
