Chocolove Pretzel in Milk Chocolate

I had so much fun blogging my way through the Trader Joe’s Chocolate Passport series that I’ve decided to start another series. This time it will cover exclusively Milk Chocolates. As many of you know, I’m a huge Dark Chocolate fan so you might think this is out of character for me.

Actually, I really do like a good milk chocolate, it’s just that I’m rather picky about how I define “good milk chocolate.” I like my milk chocolate to be more milky and chocolatey than sweet, and I like to have some kind of inclusion to be in the mix (like fruit, nuts, cookies, or pretzels) so it’s not just solid milk chocolate.

Having said that, I promise that during this Milk Chocolate Lovers Series, I will jump out of my comfort zone, throw my strict milk chocolate snobbishness out the window, and review all types of milk chocolate for you. And happily give you my no holds barred opinion. Deal?

Chocolove Pretzel in Milk ChocolateWe begin our Milk Chocolate Lovers series with a Chocolove® Pretzel in Milk Chocolate. This milk chocolate is made with 33% cacao which is higher than the average milk chocolate.

In order to put “milk chocolate” on the label, it must contain a minimum of 10% cocoa solids and 12% milk solids. In general, low cost milk chocolates hover at the minimum level while higher cost milk chocolates go beyond the minimum.

The aromas coming off the Pretzel bar are very strong bread, wood, and vanilla.

This bar is stuffed full with pretzel pieces. There are so many that the chocolate can barely hold it together. When you break the bar apart, it crumbles a little and small pieces of chocolate and pretzel separate.

The chocolate is soft and melts quickly in your hand. The pretzels are crunchy but also a tad soft, like they’ve soaked up a little cocoa butter. The chocolate melts quickly and evenly while chewing, and at the end, a bit of pretzel remains and the chocolatey flavors have a long finish.

The flavor profile of the chocolate alone is pretty good, with toffee, nutty, and honey notes. The salt from the pretzel makes the chocolate taste even more intense. The pretzel by itself is salty with notes of toast, cracker, and caramel.

This is a delicious milk chocolate bar. At one point, however, I found myself eating too much of it too fast, and the rich milk flavors combined with the sweetness level got to be too overwhelming for me. It’s better in smaller quantities at a slower pace (I realize this is a completely ridiculous statement to many milk chocolate lovers!).

Enjoy!
