Deep-Fried Candy Bars

We often crave  something sweet and something that will appeal to our very keen and varying tastes.  Today I am talking about something that may seem unfamiliar or uncommon to you, and it might be just the thing you are looking for.  I am talking about deep-fried candy bars.  Yes, you read right, deep fried candy bars!

The usual batter some chefs or home cooks use for frying dishes like fried chicken, fish, meat, or sausages can also be used for frying these sweet treats. The candy bars must be thoroughly chilled before they undergo the process of being battered. This is done to ensure that the chocolate doesn't melt into a hot, fatty, sticky mess.

This rare treat has its roots traced back into the heart of Scotland, from a fried fish shop that did it to create a novelty item.  But much to their surprise, these fried candy bars suddenly became a hot selling product.  The credit for this invention was given to the Haven Chip Bar in Stonehaven, dating back to 1995. Stonehaven is a town located in the northeast coast of Scotland, near the historic place of Aberdeen.

A little more than 300 fried fish shops became part of a research study back in 2004.  The study indicated that almost 22%  of these shops sold candy bars that are fried.  Moreover, 17% of these shops had sold them in the past years.

In more recent years, nearly 75% were found to have been selling these treats, with an average of 23 bars per week.  The more popular shops were able to sell at least 50, and up to 200, of these bars every passing week.  The typical price in US dollars is $1.75.  Most of the buyers are children.

Even an overseas British cafe, situated in the country of Thailand, has added deep fried candy bars to their own menu.  This delicacy was initially dubbed as a prank, but when more buyers found it satisfying, it became a regular item on the menu becoming very popular among locals and tourists alike.

This treat has also been made famous in far flung places from its origins such as New Zealand and Australia.

So have you had a deep-fried candy bar?  Please share your experiences in the comments below.

When I found out there were such a things a deep fried chocolate bars, I had to find out which place in my local area served these. The one I got was from a small cafe that serves mainly french fries. Their version of the bar was dipped in batter and served with whipped cream with some strawberry sauce. It was a gooey and decadent treat that’s for sure. If I was to make a change, it would be to request it in a light and flakey batter. But all in all, it was good.
