Ritter Sport Edel-Bitter mit Edel-Kakao aus Ecuador

In 1912, Alfred and Clara Ritter opened their small chocolate and confectionery factory in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany. Today, their presence in Germany and around the globe is well known.

Last month, my mom took a trip to Berlin, Germany, to visit my sister who recently moved there. One of their adventures together took them to the Ritter Sport ChocoWorld in Berlin.

They found three floors of chocolate to explore, taste, and create! You can learn more about that here.

Personalized Ritter Chocolate Bars

With my 6 year-old niece in tow, my sister and mother headed to the ChocoCreation area where they created several chocolate bars to bring back to the States.

All they had to do was pick out the ingredients, and the staff made a customized chocolate bar just as they imagined.

My personalized bar was a dark chocolate made with cacao nibs, sour cherry bits, and topped with gold star-shaped confetti (I get the feeling my niece insisted on those gold star sprinkles!). Yum!

While shopping in ChocoWorld, my mother spotted a ready-made chocolate bar she thought I would like. It is a variety I haven’t seen for sale in the U.S...

"Edel-Bitter" = "Fine Dark" Retail Chocolate Bar

Ritter Sport - Edel-Bitter (Fine Dark)It’s Ritter's 73% Fine Extra Dark Chocolate, and it is very good. The chocolate notes are incredibly balanced, from beginning to end.

The bar contains cacao from the Arriba region of Ecuador. This area produces a strong flavored bean, heavy in cocoa, light on fruit and spice, with a long finish and soft bitter notes at the end.

I had a difficult time finding any flavor notes that jumped out at me. It was steady goodness all the way through!

It’s too bad I enjoyed the Edel-Bitter so much because now I’ll have to search around to find more!

Here's a link to the English version of the bar on the Ritter site. And here's a link to a single bar on Amazon.com, and a 9-pack shipped fresh from Germany.
