Road Crew Clusters’ Dark Chocolate Detour is a sweet and salty snack of semi-sweet chocolate coated peanuts, rice puffs, and pretzels.
Ah, snacks. Sweet. Salty. Sweet and salty. Why do sweet and salty things taste so good together? Scientists think they know why. It all comes down to the cells that make up our taste buds. Certain cells are activated by sugar and we taste “sweet”. And some “sweet” cells are only activated when accompanied by salt.

Tasting Road Crew Clusters
The chocolate itself has mild cocoa notes with some earthy and dried fruit notes. While the chocolate coating adds the “sweet”, the peanuts and pretzels add the salty. The texture of the chocolate is smooth, while the pretzels and puffs offer a great crunch.
Because I’m such a fan of extreme dark chocolate, I’m surprised this sweeter chocolate coating doesn’t turn me off. I think it’s all the flavors mingling together that I like. I do have a weakness for that sweet and salty combination.
Right, so these snacks are quite addicting! I’m not just speaking for myself. I witnessed my husband nearly empty the bag before I tore it out of his hands and inhaled the rest. It was the fastest fight we’ve ever been in, over in mere minutes. Ha! We never fight over the serious stuff, just chocolate!
