Sanders Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels

In 1875, Fred Sanders Schmidt (known as Fred Sanders) opened Sanders Fine Chocolates in Detroit, Michigan. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Sanders chocolate products and shoppes were all over the Great Lakes region. The shoppes sold not only chocolates and candies, but served light lunches, ice cream sodas, and hot fudge sundaes. Morley Candy Makers, Inc., bought Sanders in 2002.

Every once in a while I like to enjoy a dark chocolate covered caramel. I can get tired of caramels pretty quickly though. (I don’t particularly like how the caramel adheres to my teeth for so long after the chocolate coating melts and the chocolate flavors fade).

The Sanders dark chocolate covered sea salt caramels I tasted, came three to a package (in the purple package shown above). Each was a generously sized bite. They have a nice dark brown appearance and a coarse sea salt is sprinkled on top.

The caramel is quite strong with a deep cooked flavor, light brown sugar notes, and a buttery aftertaste.

The chocolate coating is earthy and nutty, smooth and fruity, and not bitter. The chocolate does a fairly good job of holding these flavors throughout the chew, and the caramel, butter, and brown sugar notes blend nicely. The overall sweetness isn’t too bad, but sweet nonetheless.

The texture of the caramel is soft and chewy, and of course, sticks to your teeth! The coating is bendable with little breakage as you chew. The salt didn’t stick, however, and most of it ended up remaining in the package.

These chocolate coated caramels were good, but not outstanding. Quite literally, nothing stood out! I can’t say the caramel was oh-so-good or that the chocolate by itself really impressed me. The two together made it satisfying but not worth shouting about. Actually, shouting would have been rather difficult anyway because I my teeth were glued shut.

You can find the 36 oz. jar of these Sea Salt Caramels on Amazon
