Sweet Obsession Milk Chocolate Review

Back in July of 2011 I posted a review of the Sweet Obsession chocolate bars (milk and dark).  It has been my most popular (and controversial) review as many comments were written from individuals whole heartedly disagreeing with my negative appraisal.

Over the years, more than one person has asked me to taste the bars again and re-review them. Well, it has been nearly 4 years so why not?

Plus I was told by the manager of a grocery store that sells Sweet Obsession, “this chocolate flies off the shelf.” In fact, when I went to buy them, only the milk chocolate was available. The dark chocolate was sold out.

Social proof was having its way with me, and I caved under its pressure... I bought the milk chocolate bar.

I was still pretty skeptical though, as the price hadn’t changed in four years. It’s still only a dollar. Hmmm. You must ask yourself, would you buy a bottle of wine for a dollar? I hold chocolate in the same regard as wine, and it’s true that “you get what you pay for.”

Okay, drum roll please. I have tasted the Sweet Obsession milk chocolate bar and concluded...
It’s not horrible.

The texture was the first and most obvious difference between then and now. This time the chocolate bar is smoother and not nearly as gritty.

However, the mouthfeel is as I remember it – still waxy (but not as bad), and it doesn’t melt in my mouth like fine European chocolate. (The label says it’s “Fine European Chocolate.” Of course, I can agree that, yes, it was made in Europe.)

It is very sweet, but not overwhelming like last time, and I can actually taste some specific flavor notes such as milky, creamy, and nutty with a little vanilla and honey.

The flavor profile has better chocolate impact (the label does state a 25% cocoa solids minimum), and the milky after-taste is milder. Overall, much better than I remember! Thank goodness, because I was prepared to spit it out if necessary!

In the end, I give this chocolate bar an ‘okay’ rating. It’s still too sweet (sugar is first ingredient), and a little too waxy (with vegetable fats), for my liking but an improvement nonetheless.

Sorry to all those who were hoping I would agree with the bar’s tagline: "Simply the finest chocolates on earth!" Can’t do it. But look on the bright side, I no longer classify it as the worse thing ever!

I do understand though. I know why this is popular. It’s not a bad chocolate for the price. So if you're desperate for chocolate, and you only have $1, go for it.

We’ve been eating these for a few years now, (milk chocolate) and the quality has been pretty good. at $1 ea ($4.54/pound, $10/Kilo) they are a huge step up from most common US chocolate.

The reviews split pretty evenly between love and hate, though Amazon’s reviews show more 1’s than 5’s.

It appears that the QA is quite variable.
