Unreal Dark Chocolate Almond Butter

As a kid I loved Reeses’ Peanut Butter Cups. The day after Trick or Treating for Halloween, my siblings and I would trade candy, each of us looking for more of our favorites. However, none of us would give up our peanut butter cups. We all coveted them and would be envious of the person that got more of them in their candy bag.
My favorite way to eat them was cold. I’d put one in the refrigerator after school and by homework time, I’d treat myself to an ice cold, milk chocolate covered, sugary peanut butter filled confection.
As an adult, my only fondness for Reeses’ peanut butter cups are found in nostalgic memories. Now, my pallet soundly rejects everything I used to enjoy about it, especially the sweetness. Today, I enjoy other “butters” like sunflower seed butter and almond butter. And I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate.
Tasting Unreal Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups

According to the Unreal website, two brothers, Nicky and Kris, would dream about creating their favorite chocolate snacks “without the bad stuff”. Indeed, these almond butter cups are non-gmo verified, fair trade, organic and gluten free. And of course, claim to have “unreal” taste.
The chocolate coating is very soft and it melts quickly in the mouth (as well as on the fingers!). The almond butter filling is a little gritty. The chocolate coating is smooth, with rich, roasted cocoa notes and soft nutty and vanilla flavors. The almond butter has pronounced almond flavor.
The chocolate starts out strong, but quickly mellows out as the almond butter overpowers it. It’s a good flavor combination, but I would love to have the dark chocolate even “darker”. In my opinion, cutting the sweetness with a higher percentage dark chocolate would make this “butter” cup my new favorite.
But, as it stands, that number one spot is reserved for Free2B Sun Cups. The Sun Cups have sunflower seed butter in the middle and are covered by a 60% dark chocolate coating.
Still, these Unreal almond butter cups are pretty darn delicious. For real!
