Nestlé USA Drops Artificial Flavor and Color from Chocolate

Announced on February 17th, 2015, Nestlé USA claimed it will be the first major candy manufacturer to eliminate all artificial color and flavor from its chocolates. The company plans to have this goal completed by the end of 2015. 

Alongside this endeavor, Nestlé USA is also seeking to remove caramel coloring from its chocolate products, which is used in nine of the 250+ chocolate products. Additionally, all upcoming chocolate and non-chocolate candy products (gummies, sours, etc.) introduced by Nestlé USA will be made without artificial flavors or colors.

Chocolate House Accused of Gentrification

Industry City, a complex of 16 buildings on the edge of Sunset Park in Brooklyn, NY, recently became the home to Manhattan’s oldest chocolate house, Li-Lac Chocolates. The chocolate shop now sits among wholesaler’s trucks, loading docks, laundry mats, and barber shops. Although its wrap around windows and chocolate aromas are most inviting, some were not enthused to welcome Li-Lac to the neighborhood in late 2014.

Harry Potter Chocolate Certified Fair-Trade

Big news from the wizarding world. Just before Christmas, Harry Potter studio Warner Bros. pledged that chocolates associated with Harry Potter will have to be certified fair-trade or be approved by UTZ by the end of 2015, if not sooner. This includes chocolate products sold at Warner Bros. outlets, and through its licensed partners.

The Hershey’s chocolate company has teamed up with 3D Systems to unveil a 3D Chocolate Candy Printing exhibit at Hershey’s Chocolate World in Hershey, PA. Those who visit the store will be able to interact with Hershey scientists and the new technology to personalize their chocolates.

Here in the States, we probably take one or two things for granted. Among them, the cost of chocolate pudding! Now, I’ve seen pudding snacks range from $1-4 for a four or six pack of pre-made, pre-packaged, chocolate yumminess. And, I wouldn’t say that’s unreasonable.

Boy’s ‘Chocolate Bar’ Book Raises $1M

Suffering from a rare liver disorder, 9 year old Jonah undergoes treatments every few hours. The disease, GSD Type 1b, affects only 500 children worldwide.

GSD Type 1b affects literally one in a million, and is an incurable genetic condition. Those born with the disease lack the appropriate liver enzyme required to turn glycogen into glucose. This means they cannot properly regulate their blood sugar levels.
