Chocolate & Ice Cream: The Ultimate Summer Pairing

When the sun’s blazing and you’re craving something cold and sweet, ice cream is a no-brainer. Add chocolate to the mix, and it’s an instant win! But if you’re trying to keep things light and healthy, you don’t have to give up this dreamy duo. You just need to make a few simple swaps. Here’s a simple, no-churn recipe using frozen bananas and real cocoa powder. It’s vegan, dairy-free, and naturally sweet!

Why This Combo Works

1. Naturally Satisfying

Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and can satisfy cravings with just a small amount. Paired with a creamy base like frozen bananas or Greek yogurt, you get that indulgent feeling without all the added sugar.

2. No Guilt, Just Goodness

By using natural ingredients and skipping the heavy cream and sugar, you can enjoy a treat that’s good for your body and your mood.

3. You’re in Control

Making it at home means you control what goes in, no weird ingredients or mystery sweeteners.

Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream Recipe

What you need:

  • 3 ripe bananas, peeled, sliced, and frozen
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (or raw cacao powder)
  • 1–2 tbsp almond milk (or any milk of choice), just to blend
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1–2 tbsp dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher)

What to do:

1. Blend It Up:

In a high-powered blender or food processor, add the frozen banana slices, cocoa powder, vanilla, and a splash of milk. Blend until smooth and creamy. You may need to stop and scrape the sides a few times.

2. Stir in the Chocolate:

For a little crunch, stir in chopped dark chocolate or chocolate chips. You can also swirl in a spoonful of almond butter or crushed nuts if you want extra texture.

3. Freeze (or Serve Soft):

You can enjoy it right away as soft-serve, or transfer it to a container and freeze for 1–2 hours for a firmer scoop.

Other Healthy Chocolate-Ice Cream Ideas

  • Greek yogurt + cocoa + honey: Stir together and freeze for a creamy, protein-rich treat.
  • Avocado chocolate nice cream: Blend ripe avocado, cocoa, banana, and maple syrup for a super creamy texture.
  • Coconut milk + cacao + dates: A rich, dairy-free option sweetened with fruit.

    Dear Carissa,
In the chocolate banana ice cream you use cocoa powder. I wonder, if I use melted chocolate instead, how this will change the ratio of the ingredients in the recipe?
