Chocolaty Bread

The Netherlands is probably one of the biggest fans of bread in Europe. A lot of tourists who get to swing by are enamoured with the assortment of their breads. Generally, their breakfast and lunch mainly consist of bread. That being said, you won't be surprised by the variety of bread and sandwich toppings you can find there. "Luxury" isn't the right term for it, you might want to lean toward "necessity".

Typically, breakfast consists of 2-4 slices of bread, and it depends on whether you'd like an open or closed-face sandwich. Margarine or butter is spread onto the bread in order for the toppings to stick. One sandwich will have a cover that is on the more savory side, and the other one will be on the sweeter side. Dutch children typically eat the savory sandwich first, followed by the sweet one which they usually crave.

Chocolate Apple Bread

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." True enough, research has it that consuming apples helps us in controlling weight gain. Also, apples could lower our risks of developing certain heart diseases and cancer, among others.

The flavors of chocolate and apple combined works so well in this subtly-spiced bread recipe. The chunky apples even retain some of their crunch and firmness such that every bite will be a delight! And you can never take for granted the scattered chocolate chips throughout, as well as the crunch of the chopped walnuts.

It goes perfectly well with a cup of Joe or a cup of warm tea on days you like to unwind.

Chocolate Bunny Bread

Chocolate bunnies?  How about a chocolatey loaf of bread shaped like a bunny instead?  OK, how about eating the bread first and then the usual chocolate bunnies for dessert?

Here's a recipe for a chocolate bread, with the added benefit of chocolate chips, shaped into a fun bunny for Easter.  If you want to sweeten it for the kids, decorate with frosting and jelly beans.

Chocolate Bunny Bread

• 3 1/4-3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 2/3 cup sugar
• 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 2 packages rapid rise yeast
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 2/3 cup milk
• 1/4 cup water
• 1/4 cup butter or margarine
• 1 egg
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
• 1/3 cup milk or dark chocolate chips
• Decorations: jelly beans, frosting (optional)

Chocolate Bread (Mini Loaves)

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
• 1 cup warm water (105-115°)
• 2 envelopes dry yeast
• 2 tablespoons honey
 
• 1 cup lukewarm milk (95°F)
• 3 tablespoons butter, melted
• 4-5 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
• 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
 
• 1 egg, beaten
• 2 tablespoons whipping cream
