Lollipops: Humble Beginnings

Lollipops are a sweet treat, loved by adults and children alike all over the world. They are available in a variety of colors and flavors, often fruit flavors, but there are also chocolate-flavored ones.

With many companies competing to create and distribute lollipops, the candy has become available in many different shapes too. They range from small ones that can be purchased in bulk and given away as mini gifts, to large ones that are made with candy canes twisted into a circle.

The recorded largest lollipop was made and certified on the 25th of June, 2002. It weighed a total of 4,031 pounds (including its stick), measured 18.9 inches thick, and exceeded 15 feet tall (approximately as tall as a typical giraffe). It came in cherry flavor and was the "talk of the world" at the time.

The word lollipop has been colloquially used in a variety of popular songs like the "Lollipop Guild" that was featured in the the movie "The Wizard of Oz," the "Lollipop" of Chordettes, and "The Good Ship Lollipop" from the 1934 Shirley Temple movie,  "Bright Eyes".

In the United States, July 20th is considered to be National Lollipop Day.

Most lollipops are designed to be eaten at room temperature, but some lollipops are made to be ice lollipops that are water-based and frozen.

The first ever lollipop making machine was only able to make 40 lollipops in a minute. At this pace, it would take a total of 592 days just to cope with the needs of people scattered from Sugar Hill, Georgia to Sugar City, Idaho.  Nowadays, the fastest lollipop making machine is able to make 5,900 lollipops a minute.

The idea of having a candy on stick was the driving force for creating the lollipop.  And this continues to be the main reason why it was invented and reinvented throughout the course of time.
