Hidden Chocolate Facts: 5 Fun Facts About Your Favorite Sweet Treat

Nothing is better than eating a rich piece of chocolate for dessert (or any other time of the day, who am I to judge!) Nearly everyone around the world is a fan of chocolate - there’s a reason it’s a multi-billion dollar industry. However, there are tons of wild facts about chocolate that make this food as interesting as it is delicious. If you’d like to learn more about your favorite tasty treat then check out these interesting facts below...

1. According to the Smithsonian, chocolate was a form of currency during the Mayan and Aztec times. Cacao beans were so sought after that they were used as forms of payment! This publication, found on smithsonian.com, also mentions that there is evidence that some people went as far as making counterfeit cocoa beans from brown clay.

2. A BBC survey conducted in 2004 found that 79% of people are willing to give out personal information for a bar of chocolate! Volunteers filled out a survey and revealed that they would share their computer password, birthday, and other information that would be useful for identity thieves. I guess this answers the age old question, “what would you do for a Klondike Bar?”

3. How much would you spend on a chocolate bar? Specifically a 110 year old chocolate bar? According to Guinness World Records, a Cadbury chocolate bar that was over 100 years old and went on Captain Robert Scott’s first Antarctic expedition sold for $687 in 2001.

4. The classic chocolate chip cookie was actually invented by accident! Ruth Graves Wakefield created this tasty cookie during the 1930’s while attempting to make a batch of Butter Drop Do cookies for some guests. The chocolate chips that she added to the batter stayed intact instead of melting and this iconic (and my person favorite) cookie was born.

5. Here’s another Guinness World Record fact: the world’s largest chocolate bar weighed approximately 12,770 pounds. This giant chunk of chocolate was created by Thorntons PLC in the United Kingdom on September 7, 2011. For reference, an average chocolate bar weighs around 2 ounces!
