Green & Black’s Organic Milk Chocolate

Milk Chocolate Lovers Series, part 5: Green & Black’s Organic Milk Chocolate

Green & Black’s has long been one of my favorite chocolate brands. They make a superb 85% dark chocolate! Of course, in keeping with my current Milk Chocolate Lovers theme, I’m reviewing their 34% organic milk chocolate. No added nuts or toffee pieces. No distractions. Just pure milk chocolate.

Green & Black's Organic Milk ChocolateThe aromas wafting from the bar are earthy, wood, grass, and leather. The color is a soft medium golden brown. The snap is good. The texture is smooth but thick and dry. It melts slowly.

The first flavor that hits you right away is that of fresh fruit; melon or pineapple. It’s hard to describe, but it reminds me of a fruit punch.

After that brief fruity encounter, the majority is chocolate, caramel and a hint of candied almonds. There’s a strong buttery finish and aftertaste.

About Green & Black's

Green & Black’s had humble and successful beginnings when it was founded by Craig Sams and Jo Fairley in London in 1991.

The “Green” stands for the founders’ environmental and sustainability concerns and “Black” for the high cocoa content they wanted to provide in each bar.

They were also committed to purchasing Fairtrade cocoa and using only organic ingredients. In 2005 they sold to Cadbury, and then in 2010 it was taken over by Kraft Foods. Currently, Green and Black’s chocolate is manufactured in Canada, Poland, and Italy.

According to Green & Black’s website, us.greenandblacks.com, they have created a new signature line of Pure Dark and Pure Milk Chocolates that are sourced through Cocoa Life, “a holistic, third party verified cocoa sustainability program”.

This program aims to "empower 200,000 cocoa farmers and reach one million community members in six key cocoa growing regions: Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, India and Brazil. Farming communities working with Cocoa Life gain knowledge and skills that improve their livelihoods, strengthen their communities, empower women, and inspire the new generation of cocoa farmers…" If you're interested, you can find more information at cocoalife.org.

I enjoyed the Green & Black’s milk chocolate (note: this bar is part of their Organic line, not the Pure Milk line).

It’s different than the other milk chocolates I’ve tasted so far in this milk chocolate series. For example, when I compare the Green & Black’s milk to Lindt milk, I would describe the Lindt as “delicate” and the G&B as “hearty”. The Lindt is smoother, and creamier, but the G&B has more chocolatey impact. It’s too difficult for me to judge which one is more delightful.

So, I ask you, try them and let me know what you think!
