Larabar Coconut Truffles

I like Larabars. I especially like them on long bike rides. They taste good, and they give me lots of energy to be active and full of life. As you know, I also like chocolate (okay, LOVE chocolate) so when I gave the Larabar Truffles a try, I got very confused.

Am I eating a chocolate truffle or am I eating an energy bite? Part of my confusion is probably due to my chocolate expertise and background, but certainly some of the blame is with the marketing of this product.

When I see “Truffles” on a package I think of chocolate truffles – creamy smooth ganache surrounded by a hard chocolate shell or a dusting of cocoa. The photo on the packaging suggests I might find a hand-rolled truffle dusted in cocoa powder (the round, ball-like shape solidifies this in my mind). The image gives the impression of chocolate truffles you might find in a chocolate shop.

Then I opened the bag...

First of all, they’re little cubes! Okay, not a deal breaker, but that’s not ball-shaped, and it’s certainly not what I see on the package. Second, the texture is rough, not creamy or melt-away like a truffle. Third, it tastes a lot like a no bake cookie or energy bar. This is definitely something I would take on a bike ride, not have for dessert.

I ate the Chocolate Coconut Truffles. For this variety, peanut is the predominant flavor. That’s no surprise, it’s the first ingredient listed on the label. The chocolate is rich but subdued. The chocolate and peanut flavors complement each other. The dates add a sweetness to the mix. Not too sweet, which is a plus. I love the coconut, especially at the end when the bits and pieces are chewy and the chocolate is long gone.

If I set all my “truffle” expectations aside, I will say they taste good. And I will even say they satisfy my afternoon chocolate craving. But in no way do they remind me of chocolate coconut truffles.
