Luck O’ the Irish – Shamrock Truffles

I have a little Irish blood in my veins, and just a drop is all you need to celebrate with my family. Each year, we gather together for a splendid St. Patty’s Day meal. While there are many specialty foods associated with St. Patrick’s Day, chocolate is usually not one of them. But it’s top o’ mind at my nearby chocolates shop – Allo! Chocolat.

Beautifully painted in green and gold shimmering swirls, I spot shamrock shaped truffles among the chocolate covered nuts, caramels, and candies. There are two flavor varieties; Guinness Extra Stout Truffle and Jameson Irish Whiskey Truffle.

Guinness Extra Stout Truffle

I bought both!

The Guinness truffle was super rich, with deep chocolate and roasted cocoa notes. It tasted and felt like a smooth, velvety fudge. The chocolate lingered, with just a little bitterness at the finish. The flavor of the Guinness was not obvious. I think it contributed to the rich intensity of the chocolate without making a statement of it’s own.

The opposite was true of the Jameson truffle. The whiskey flavor was obvious from the start!

But the whiskey notes sat on top of a nutty chocolate base, nicely roasted and very smooth. No hint of bitterness at the end, but there was a brief little “burn” at the back of the tongue. Delicious – times two!

During the 17th century in Ireland, it was customary to wear shamrocks on the feast of Saint Patrick, the island’s patron saint. The shamrock is a widely recognized emblem of both Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock, resembling clover, is considered lucky.

Perhaps eating these shamrock truffles will bring me luck. I know they’ll make me popular when I share them at my family’s next St. Patrick’s Day dinner!
