Sunny Day Gourmet Organic Cocoa Nibs

A cacao nib is the cocoa bean without the thin shell that surrounds it.

Usually nibs are ground to make unsweetened baking chocolate. But more and more often these days, you’ll see cocoa nibs packaged and sold in small pieces or bits right in your local grocery store.

Cacao NibsNibs can be roasted or raw, but either way they are less processed than a chocolate bar and therefore pass along more of the valuable, healthy flavonoids when eaten.

I absolutely love roasted nibs sprinkled on yogurt and ice cream, baked in cookies, and on top of my breakfast oatmeal.

Sunny Day Gourmet cocoa nibs are organic, roasted, and sourced from Peru.

The flavor profile of the Peruvian bean is nicely balanced, rich, bold, and chocolatey with a hint of vanilla and nutty notes at the end. The texture is perfect with the combination of crunchy nib and cocoa butter, giving the strange sensation of a solid mass melting in your mouth.

Over the years I’ve tasted many varieties of nibs from many brands, and, so far, I like the Sunny Day Gourmet brand the best. They do a wonderful job of packaging a clean nib, free from shell fragments and sandy debris. I like the roast of the nib and the flavor profile of the Peruvian bean.

I found these at Roundy’s Pick 'n Save and also at Woodman’s, both in the Milwaukee area (which is also the location of Sunny Day Gourmet).

Unfortunately, I went to their website to find out if you can order online and was unable to find the nibs in a search. However, there are ways to contact them. My guess, if you ask, is that they will send some your way.

Enjoy!!
