Divine Chocolate Advent Calendar

You’re never too old for an Advent Calendar!

Okay, I’m never too old for an advent calendar. I say that, but our house hasn’t had one in a while. There are a couple of reasons.

First, I’m really picky. Too many advent calendars have chocolate in them (that’s okay), usually with milk chocolate (not my favorite), and the chocolate is cheap, extra thin, and oxidized (definitely not worth it).

Second, as long as my youngest child was around, food allergies made it unsafe for her to eat the chocolate pieces. So, while the kid in me loves the thought of counting down to Christmas with an advent calendar, I’m in the habit of ignoring them.

But a couple days ago, it just so happened that I saw Divine Chocolate brand’s calendar at my local natural foods store. Divine makes good chocolate and, well, my children are grown and (mostly) out of the house. So what’s the excuse? It’s time to be a kid again and get back into the advent calendar spirit.

As far as I can tell, from reading bits of trivia on the internet, chocolate started appearing in printed advent calendars in the late 1950’s. The calendar begins on December 1st and counts down the 24 days until Christmas. Open a paper door each day and find a “prize”. If you get a Divine Chocolate Advent Calendar, you can get a delicious heart-shaped milk chocolate prize.

In addition to a small chocolate treat, inside each window you’ll find part of the Christmas story and the flag of a different country in the world where Divine Chocolate is made or sold or where the chocolate ingredients are grown.

The chocolate is very milky and buttery with lots of caramel and toffee notes. The chocolate is nutty, fruity, and offers a hint of something floral, perhaps from a tropical fruit flavor I can’t quite put my finger on. There are notes of honey and vanilla. It’s sweet, smooth, but not velvety, and a bit thick in the mouth with a slow melt. A very nice aftertaste of nuts and honey lingers at the end.

Christmas, here I come! One chocolate heart at a time. Next year I’m getting the dark chocolate version.

I found this version on Amazon, and this version at Divine's online store. Both are similar in size and amount of chocolate, but have different packaging.
