Endangered Species – Hazelnut Toffee and Tart Raspberries

Another Endangered Species chocolate review – actually, two of them. Why do I keep coming back to this brand? Well, there are a lot of varieties (more than 15 flavors in chocolate bars alone) to get through. But more than that, they always provide a consistent, good tasting chocolate. And I can find them everywhere.

Just for grins, I went to their website and typed my location into the “Find My Nearest Store” field. There are 20 stores within a short driving distance of my home that carry this brand. Each bar is a pleasure to eat, and a pleasure to write about.

The bars I’ve enjoyed today are Hazelnut Toffee and Tart Raspberry. In case you’re wondering, these bars support the Rhino and the Grizzly, respectively. Both are 72% dark chocolate.

Hazelnut Toffee

The aroma has delicate scents of coconut and cinnamon. The chocolate is nutty, spicy, and has a hint of coffee. While the toffee pieces bring the buttery flavor notes into the mix, it’s definitely more nutty than buttery.

I would have liked the buttery notes to have had more impact or at least the toffee to have more of a cooked milk or caramel flavor. No downside though because the toffee notes, even with low impact, enhance the chocolatey taste and make it taste richer.

Tart Raspberries

The aroma is chocolatey and earthy mixed with leather. There is “sweet” smell, too.

The chocolate tasted nicely roasted with sour raspberry right at the beginning and raspberry and coffee at the end. The earthy notes are there throughout.

Similar to the toffee, I have a yearning that the raspberry should be stronger. There’s a nice slow melt that would give more time for the raspberry to stand out, but it fades quickly. I bet the right wine pairing would bring out the raspberry flavor!

Odds are good that you can these chocolate bars at a store near you. If not, here's the Endangered Species product page.
