Chocolat 229 in Galena, Illinois

A few weekends ago, I visited the historic small town of Galena, Illinois. Galena is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is nestled among the rolling hills of northwest Illinois near the Mississippi river. Galena was named after the mineral “galena” that was mined first by Native Americans and then by settlers.

When I wandered around the downtown among the nicely preserved old buildings, I loved the natural beauty, the architecture and the history.

Always one to keep an eye out for chocolate shops, I found Chocolat 229. They sell European and Domestic chocolate. I bought an assortment of truffles to try – and share. There was Lavender Honey Caramel, Jalepeno, Mango Toasted Coconut, Peach Walnut, Pomegranate, and Blueberry.

They were all pretty good. Of course I learned that I liked some more than others. The Lavendar Honey Caramel was as delicious as I imagined it would be. The pomegranate truffle surprised me by being so full of seeds that I forgot to pay attention to the flavor. Some truffles tasted fresher than others.

There were not a lot of people buying up chocolate the day I was there. That could probably be explained by the time of year. I mean, just because it was February in the Midwest doesn’t mean a little cold wind and icy streets should keep the visitors away!
