Coco Chocolatier – Gin and Tonic Chocolate Bar

Edinburgh is Scotland's capital. Home of Edinburgh Castle and Scotland’s crown jewels. Also home to Coco Chocolatier.

Coco uses South American cocoa and lots of creativity to craft unique flavor combinations. Each package is literally a work of art. They ask independent artists to create original designs for each chocolate bar. Check out their website,  www.cocochocolatier.com, to see the amazing designs.

The Gin and Tonic 61% dark chocolate traveled “across the pond” from the Scotland to Wisconsin to end up in World Market – a chain of specialty import stores. The dark chocolate is single origin infused with lemon and lime oils and juniper berry oil. All are harmoniously blended to conjure up the taste sensation of Gin and Tonic.

If only that were true! I like gin and tonic, so I was prepared for the juniper berry to jump out at me followed by those lemon and lime flavors. Didn’t happen. The chocolate was tasty but honestly, I found no juniper, no lemon, no lime. I shared this bar with three other people and they all said, “Good chocolate,” and were very surprised when I told them it was supposed to remind them of gin and tonic.

What flavors did I find? I tasted lightly roasted cocoa with a hint of alfalfa or maybe freshly mowed lawn as an aftertaste. So, there was something there, but it wasn’t the gin and tonic I expected.

Although this bar disappointed, I’m still up for trying more of Coco’s distinctive offerings like “Isle of Skye Sea Salt” in milk and dark chocolate, “Passion Friut” in dark chocolate, and “Rhubarb and Ginger” in milk chocolate.

I think I’ll drink my gin and tonic and eat my chocolate. Hmm….what pairs well with gin and tonic? That’s worthy to explore!
