Śliwka Nałęczowska – Chocolate-Covered Candied Plums

Over the Labor Day holiday, I had the unique opportunity to invite my co-workers visiting from Poland to my house for a casual gathering and cook-out. I was surprised and honored to receive a gift of chocolate - a Polish sweet treat called Śliwka Nałęczowska, or dried candied plum in chocolate. How did they know that chocolate would be the absolute perfect gift for me??

These chocolate-covered plums are individually wrapped and are quite large. The coating surrounds what looks like an entire dried plum as the filling. The chocolate has the color of a “dark milk,” but I don’t know the percentage.

There are actually two layers of coating. One is a thin coating that covers the plum in a creamy textured ganache-like style, and the outer coating is a very thick milk chocolate shell.

The overall chocolate texture is a bit gritty, but because you’re also eating the dried plum it’s not very noticeable. Of course it’s sweet, but I didn’t find the sweetness over the top or overwhelming.

The chocolatey flavor still comes through very well. I also found that the plum does not overtake the chocolate either. All the flavor notes work very well together, and I enjoyed every bite.

Now that I’m hooked, where can I buy more? I searched online and (thank goodness!) I can get it imported from Poland on Amazon.com. As I am writing this I found a 6.7 oz package for $9.25 with free shipping. Or, to share with friends or enjoy for much longer, there's a 2.2 lb bag (1 kg) for $31.98 with free shipping.

Although a reciprocal visit to Poland would be great fun, it would cost considerably more than simply getting a little bit of Poland sent to me. I’ll be adding Śliwka Nałęczowska to my Christmas wish list!

If you think these are great. As a child, these treats were made differently. The chocolate shell was the same, but there was a liquid in the middle, allowing the plum to swim in the center. I would pay real money to find the original version. I can only imagine these modern versions have a longer shelf life, but there is no competition.
